Information
Inspired by the type set on What's Going On from Marvin Gaye.
We had the pleasure of working with Commonwealth // McCann to develop out a typeface for the Motown Museum in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On.
The album title was set in Tedesca, but the cover designer, Curtis McNair, took some nice liberties in adjusting the letterforms when setting the type. Pentz continues in this theme, reviving Tedesca (originally designed in the late 19th century), but adding some of our own stylistic flair. We’ve made it available in two main styles: Classic and Regular. Classic is more faithful to the original, while Regular is reimagined and restrained at times without losing any of the charm. This whole project felt like a dream come true as I grew up in a house filled with Motown songs courtesy of my mom.
